Marché St. Norbert Farmers’ Market – Vision 2020
The Marché St. Norbert Farmers’ Market, Manitoba’s largest and best-known farmers’ market, has been ranked as one of Canada’s top 10 by Canadian Geographic. For 25 years, this farmers’ cooperative has shared the bounties of the field with an eager clientele. With the financial support of Entreprises Riel, the St. Norbert Foundation, Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives and the St. Norbert Farmers’ Market Co-op, a vision and development plan was prepared by consultants and tabled in June 2011. Over the course of this reporting period, Entreprises Riel has worked with the Market on a development plan. We helped elaborate a Request for Proposal for a consultant to begin conceptualizing the physical enhancements for the site. Working with the landscape architects, Hilderman Thomas Frank and the architectural firm PSA, design work has been done for site grading and landscaping as well as designs for permanent structures such as washrooms, a small office and shelters for vendors. Thus far, the Market has prioritized and committed to move forward with the landscaping component which was anticipated to begin this spring. However, with the weather being unusually cold, the grounds had not thawed sufficiently to begin work in time to be ready for opening day. A fall start is now anticipated. Meanwhile, we continue to work with the Market to provide guidance through this phase and discussions, as well as ensuring ongoing fundraising to secure the permanent structure phase of the project.
